    Corporate history

    IG Index, the original IG Group company, was founded in 1974. It was the first financial spread betting company in Britain, and is today the leading operation of its type in the world. The group expanded rapidly in the 1990s with the introduction of Foreign Exchange dealing and Contracts for Differences (CFDs).

    In 2000 IG Group was floated on the London Stock Exchange. In 2003 the founder's decision to sell his remaining interest in the company compelled a management buyout backed by CVC Capital Partners. Over the last four years the group has continued to expand its product range and scope of operations including the establishment of rapidly growing businesses in Australia and Singapore. 

    In May 2005, IG Group Holdings plc was floated on the main list of the London Stock Exchange. Since then it has been promoted to become a member of the FTSE 250 and currently has a market capitalisation of around £1.2 billion.

    IG Group companies have tens of thousands of clients worldwide making around 500,000 transactions a month, over 90% of them online. In the year to May 2007, the Group achieved a turnover of £122m, and generated a record profit before tax of £69m.
